You might think that you are not going to be affected by it but eventually it is important to deal with office politics.

No matter what you might be told and what you might believe at the moment, you can deal with office politics. Here are some things that will help you do just that.

Focus On Planning

Just as in all types of politics, knowledge is power. You want to observe and think about how you can survive in the working environment. Think about the following in order to create your strategy:

  • Who are the co-workers that are the weakest and who are the strongest?
  • Who influences others?
  • Who are the people that are most feared and most respected?

Get Personal

You want to subtly figure out every single person that is a threat and learn as much as you can about them. You want to find out who those people are that they now dislike. See who is faced with interpersonal conflict, spot cliques and groups. See why groups remain together. You will quickly notice that in many cases this is not because of friendship. Obviously, you also have to figure out where manipulation, respect and nepotism are seen.

Start From Scratch

When you know who is who in the organization it is time to start building relations. You should never worry about making new friends among the important people. You want relationships to be based on honest and you should stick to those co-workers that are influential. Do be sure that you make friends with assistants and people that you have something in common with. Information does travel really fast in a company so you can easily widen the personal network as you stick to a group of people.

Playing Nice

In office politics it is really important that you are close to those that can be a threat to you. Those that are harsh will often be insecure and you should remember the fact that being nice will often go a long way. It is going to take some time until you are going to be in good working relations with some people but all office politics will be simpler afterward.

You As A Priority

People do not actually care if you are smart, popular or rich. Few think about you being nice or rude. What is really important is that you are the one person that should care. Remember why you are doing what you are doing and you have to do all that is needed to stay positive, maintain integrity and go over personal conflicts. Also, in your own team be sure that you keep office politics to a minimum.
