During the meeting with doctor on the 4th day of my period, the doctor set the 11th day for another appointment. This is for scanning/ultrasound to see whether my ovary has produced enough eggs for IUI.
Doctor K said that if there is more than 4 matured eggs, then we can proceed with IUI. But, if less than that, she will ask us to do it naturally i.e have sex.
More than matured eggs are needed so that IUI will be a higher percentage of success.
My appointment with Dr K was on 16th May 2007 for the ultrasound. I arrived at 7.30am, but needed to wait until 9.15am because my doctors came in late. Hmm… it was raining that morning so that was acceptable.
I was asked to get into the ultrasound room next to Dr K’s room, and took off my pant and panty. Then, I got on the special seat where I needed to open both my legs & put them on the purple holders.
Initially, I thought the ultrasound process was the same as doing ultrasound to see a baby in a mother’s womb i.e the Abdominal/Pelvic Ultrasound — where the mother lies on a bed and the doctor rub some blue gel, then move the transducer over the stomach.
But, I was wrong! The Abdominal Ultrasound is not used for infertility treatment. Instead, they use Transvaginal Ultrasound (I found this on the internet).
Unlike the abdominal ultrasound, a full bladder is not necessary for this type of ultrasound. So, I was asked to empty my bladder before the procedure.
During the ultrasound, the ultrasound probe was inserted into my vagina. Before that, Dr K has rubbed some gel on the probe. So, how did it feel? I felt a bit pain during insertion, and mild pains when the doctor move around the probe from left to right, and left again to see both my ovaries.
I could see the image of my ovaries and eggs follicles on the screen! Dr K measure the diameter of my eggs and noted it down. The procedure only took about 10 minutes.
I got dressed and was asked to see the doctor in her room with my husband. Dr K said that there were only 2 big eggs but there were not matured yet. Other eggs were so small. So, IUI couldn’t be done yet.
She asked me to come again on 21st May 2007 to see whether I have more eggs and whether the eggs matured for IUI.
